Pod taxis are compact, driverless electric vehicles that operate on elevated guideways. Each pod can carry four to six passengers and takes them directly to their destination no traffic signals, no congestion, and no intermediate stops, making the system highly efficient and time-saving.
Maharashtra’s first Pod Taxi project is currently taking shape in the Bandra-Kurla Complex, an initiative envisioned by the then Chief Minister and now Deputy Chief Minister, Hon. Eknath Shinde. Plans are also being prepared to introduce this system in the Mira-Bhayandar and Thane Municipal Corporation areas, further strengthening urban transport connectivity.
Why Pod Taxi Stands Out
- Pollution-free, automated, and time-saving travel
- Operates on a BOT model with no government expenditure
- A powerful step toward smart and sustainable cities
While high construction costs, advanced maintenance needs, and strict safety requirements present challenges, the Pod Taxi system remains a promising option for future-ready cities. It is not just a new transport method; it represents a significant shift toward smarter, greener, and more efficient urban living.
